Avrum Gold’s POST-GAME BASSMENT Review

by inobe delghetto

Known for quite some time at the patriarch of our city’s Lost Tribe - a welcome gathering of nightlife’s patrons, innovators, taste-maskers, producers, DJs and the like, Avrum Gold’s latest endeavor is the newly minted nightspot known as the BASSMENT.

After recovering from two succeful opening events, has BASSMENT matched your expectations?
In a word...Yes. I was really happy with the turnout. My night with MightyKat and Vincent Lemieux was a huge success with local DJs and a little over 260 people with no mainstream promo - almost 500 people came to check us out opening weekend! Both nights the vibe was strong and the music on. Both nights was great! As in any opening, there are always things you look back at and think of things we should have had or done, but over all, I thought is was a great weekend; the nights were busy and everyone I talked to was happy with the club.

Is this a natural extension of LOST TRIBE or something entirely different?

You know it is kind of funny, this is the second time I have been asked that question, only the first time was almost 2 years ago, and in Alberta. When I was involved with an Edmonton club called the Bassment - and I guess my answer is the same: The lost tribe is not so much a place but it is the people who make it up, DJs, musicians, light guys, promoters, staff, and the clubbers that all came together to make up the Lost Tribe, and I'm sure we can bring a lot of that feeling and vibe to the Bassment. Once the vibe is there the rest will follow...

I know on the opening weekend there was a lot of us (Lost Tribe) there and they seem to love the club. With my sound and lights from the loft set up in the club, I think a lot of them felt at home. I'm sure the Lost Tribe will have a presence in the club opening weekend. Except for Roy Davis Jr., all of the DJs were veterans at the loft and I am trying to support those who supported us over the last few years- as in DJs and clubbers.

What was a highlight for you during the weekend?

Playing always is my highlight. It was fun to crank up the stereo and jam out in a new room. I did really like Roy's set too. I had heard he had a rep for punishing stereo systems, so I was nervous...LOL...but I have to say he was great.

Was there anything you would have like to have done differently?

I would have liked to have better signage. I think it was a bit hard for people to find. I'd want to have 4 point sound, but we needed to run more power for that. I would have had a light jocky on Friday too, and I think if we had the posters up for our future nights that would be good too, but I'm sure we will have this all in the next few weeks.

Now that things are full steam ahead, what can we expect in the near future?

For the Bassment to become a pillar in the Montreal underground club scene. I think it will become a main staple of Montreal club life. Expect bigger sound more lights and killer DJ lineups. And that is just the beginning. ;)

Join Avrum Gold and his new Bassment Tribe each and every week at 990 St. Antoine. Come in from the back cause...
